The APCA staff is back in the office after a great leadership institute in New York City! We had a fantastic time visiting with our students and advisors. We feel very confident that our participants went back to their campus inspired and motivated to be the best leaders they can be. Dr. Kevin Kruger, NASPA President, was a huge hit with our advisors by facilitating informative and intellectual keynotes and educational sessions.

Day of Service:
On Thursday afternoon, 35 APCA delegates and a few APCA staff members traveled to Hoboken, New Jersey to work with HOPES, a Community Action Partnership whose mission is to “provide community services that respond to the social, educational and training needs of its residents in an effort to overcome barriers and fight the causes of poverty.” HOPES offers services such as early childhood services, senior services, adult services, community assistance services, and youth services. The APCA delegates and staff assisted the HOPES full-time staff members with cleaning up their building, since Hurricane Sandy damaged some of it last October. The staff at HOPES were extremely grateful for all of the time and effort that the APCA delegates and staff put into the day! (Credit: Karen McNulty, APCA Research & Development Intern)
Here is a message from Dominique A. Tornabe, Community Education Manager at HOPES CAP, Inc.:
“We wanted to send a heartfelt thank you for the APCA Day of Service. It was such a great opportunity to work with everyone – we’re still in awe at how effective the students were! Your teamwork and passion to give back to the community was awesome. We would love to have APCA again and hope to continue the relationship as the years progress.”
Leadership on Broadway Experience ft. Tony Award Winning Musical Kinky Boots
This year, for the APCA Leadership on Broadway Experience, we partnered up with Kinky Boots. After forming this partnership, we were thrilled to hear the amazing news that the musical took home multiple Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Actor. Our Executive Director, Eric Lambert gave a moving keynote about his life experiences with his father and tied it into the learning outcomes of the musical. He then surprised our students with a special appearance by lead actors Billy Porter (Tony Award winner – Best Actor) and Stark Sands. The duo sang “Not My Fathers Son” for the audience. The boots shown below in the picture were autographed and auctioned off for the charity Broadway Cares. Other items were also auctioned off including signed Broadway posters and memorabilia. From this auction, APCA raised over $8,000. To date, APCA has raised over $30,000 for Broadway Cares.
